I was recently introduced to a brilliant little plugin for Cinema 4D and 3Ds Max: IvyGrower. It basically creates.. well, ivy on your 3D geometry. With some tweaking, I’ve found a way to do away with all the generated ivy and only keep the splines it creates.
I ran IvyGrower 10 times in a row on the same mesh, generating an incredibly dense head, consisting of splines. Add a SweepNURBS to the equation and you have yourself a very dense yet very render-friendly scene. The 4000x4000px render took about 5 minutes to complete.
